Admission to the Master´s Programme Jazz (Instrumental/Vocals)

Admission to the Master's Programme Jazz (Instrumental/Vocals), which language of instructions is English, requires the successful completion of

  • the Bachelor’s Degree Programme Jazz (Instrumental/Vocals) at KUG or
  • another relevant, equivalent Study Programme at a recognized post-secondary educational institution.

 

For candidates, who have successfully completed their Bachelor´s Degree Programme Jazz (Instrumental/Vocals) at KUG, an immediate admission to the Master´s Programme Jazz (Instrumental/Vocals) is possible (exception: applicants who have completed their studies at KUG more than 2 semesters ago also have to pass the entrance exam*).

 

Candidates, who have not received their Bachelor´s Degree at KUG, have to pass an entrance exam in form of an audition by an examination board (this regulation also applies to candidates who received their Bachelor´s Degree at KUG more than two semesters ago).

 

 

Admission to the Master´s Programme Jazz Composition and Arrangement

Admission to the Master's Programme Jazz Composition and Arrangement requires the successful completion of

  • the Bachelor’s Degree Programme Jazz (Instrumental/Vocals) at KUG or
  • the Bachelor´s Degree Programme Composition and Music Theory at KUG or
  • another relevant, equivalent Study Programme at a recognized post-secondary educational institution.

 

Alll candidates have to pass an entrance exam in form of an audition by an examination board. This admission exam serves as a proof of the student´s artistic potential to succeed in the Master´s Programme.

The candidates have to submit at least 3 scores of own original works (compostions and/or arrangements) with recordings. At least 1 of these works must be composed/arranged for Large Ensembles.

 

For all external applicants* for the Master´s Programmes of Jazz (Instrumental/Vocals) and Jazz Composition and Arrangement the following applies:

In the course of the required online-application we would need the following documents in time to the application deadline (1 April 2019) in order to be able to forward your documents to our Dean of Studies for checking the equivalency of your preliminary studies:

 

  • Your Bachelor´s Diploma Certificate telling your academic degree (on your University´s letter paper and with your University´s stamps/seals and signatures)
  • Official German (English is also OK) translation* of the Bachelor´s Diploma Certificate
  • Your Bachelor´s final examination Certificate (on your University´s letter paper and with your University´s stamps/seals and signatures)  
  • Official German (English is also OK) translation* of the Bachelor´s final examination Certificate
  • Your Transcript of Records (Diploma Supplement / Academic Record / complete list of all subjects that you have passed, the credits/semester hours and grades on your University´s letter paper and with your University´s stamps/seals and signatures)
  • Official German (English is also OK) translation* of your Transcript of Records / Diploma Supplement / Academic Records / list of subjects
  • Please also pay attention to any required diplomatic legalization* of your documents!

Please note, that your major artistic subject has to be mentioned in your documents. Otherwise please submit a confirmation about your major artistic subject issued by your University (on your University´s letter paper and with your University´s stamps/seals and signatures) in addition.

 

Only after the Dean of Studies has confirmed the equivalency of your preliminary studies you will be notified for the audition.

 

The auditions for the Master´s Programmes Jazz only take place once for each academic year (basically in May or June).

The admission requirements of the auditions are at the same level of what is tested in the final committee exam in the Bachelor´s Degree Programme in Jazz (§ 4 page 17 of the curriculum and serve as a proof that the candidate has the artistic potential to cope with the Master´s Programme. 

 

Important to applicants for the Master´s Programme Jazz-Saxophone:

Due to the obligation of playing in the Big Band during the Masters Studies at KUG, the ability of playing a doubling instrument such as clarinet and/or flute will be required at the audition. Candidates are kindly asked to bring their instruments to the audition.

Please mind: After passing the audition you are not automatically admitted to the Bachelor´s Programme – the enrolment has to be done personally at the Registrar´s Office (Palais Meran, Leonhardstrasse 15, ground floor, 8010 Graz) in time! See also “How will I be admitted to the study program?
